Why is the metro and taxi situation so different at opening and closing time?

Most travel advice for Guangzhou is written for an ordinary day, and doesn’t account for what happens specifically around hall opening and closing times during an active session — a daily pattern distinct from the one-time trip most guides actually cover.

The pattern that repeats every day

Crowding on the metro toward Pazhou peaks sharply around the start of the exhibition day, as a huge number of buyers converge on the same halls at the same time, and again around closing, as everyone leaves at once. Outside these specific windows, the same metro line is considerably more comfortable, even during the fair’s busiest days overall.

Why switching to a taxi doesn’t automatically solve it

Taxi and ride-hailing demand surges at exactly the same times, for the same reason — a large number of people leaving or arriving at once. Road congestion around the complex during these windows can erase whatever speed advantage a taxi would normally have over the metro, so switching modes during peak windows often just trades one kind of crowding for another.

What actually helps

• Shift your own timing slightly. Arriving a little before the official opening crush, or leaving a little after the closing rush clears, avoids the worst of both directions without losing much actual time at booths.
• Plan your route with this pattern in mind, particularly if your hotel requires a transfer — a transfer during peak crowding is more disruptive than the same transfer at a quieter time.
• Build slack into your schedule for the first and last legs of each day, rather than planning meetings tightly against the exhibition hours.
