Do Turkish buyers need a visa for the Canton Fair?

Turkish passport holders need a business (M) visa to attend the Canton Fair — Türkiye isn’t visa-free for China, and it doesn’t qualify for the visa-free transit either. Unlike several of the markets this guide covers, Türkiye’s own visa checklist doesn’t mention a trade fair invitation as an accepted document at all, so treat the fair’s letter as one part of a larger paperwork requirement rather than something that clears the application by itself.

What the checklist actually asks for

The embassy’s current visa instructions ask for a TE letter or an equivalent verification letter, obtained through the party inviting you in China. If you don’t have one, there’s an alternative: a letter from a recognised Turkish organisation — a provincial or city-level government body, a chamber of commerce, an industry association, or your own company — submitted together with an invitation from the party inviting you in China.

A separate embassy document has previously listed the Turkish organisations accepted this way — national bodies alongside provincial chambers of commerce — which suggests a letter from your local chamber is a realistic route if you don’t have an existing relationship with a national association. That specific list was published in 2023 and hasn’t been reissued alongside the current checklist, so treat the exact set of eligible organisations as unconfirmed for right now rather than assuming every name on the older list still applies — a call to your local chamber or the embassy is worth it before you rely on this route.

Where the Canton Fair’s own invitation letter fits into this is genuinely unclear from the published guidance: it isn’t named directly anywhere in the checklist, but structurally it looks like it could satisfy the “invitation from the inviting party in China” half of the alternative route above, since the fair is a Chinese organisation issuing an addressed invitation. That’s a reasonable reading of how the document is built, not something the embassy states outright — request the fair’s invitation letter regardless, since it costs nothing, but plan on also arranging the Turkish-side letter rather than assuming the fair’s letter covers both halves.

One more thing worth knowing before you rely on the fair’s letter for even that half of the requirement: it’s generated automatically from a template the moment you request it, so it almost certainly doesn’t carry a handwritten signature or an attached business licence — there’s no step in that process where either would normally be added. If your Turkish-side letter’s own instructions expect the Chinese invitation to carry either, that’s a second reason to have the counsellor’s office at a Chinese embassy as a fallback source, not just the fair’s own system.

Tourist visa isn’t a practical alternative

Türkiye’s tourist (L) visa route is only available to groups of five or more travelling together through a licensed Chinese travel agency — the same restriction found in several other markets this guide covers. For a buyer attending on their own, the business visa above is the route that actually applies.

A couple of other differences worth knowing

There’s no expedited processing option through the embassy, so plan for standard turnaround rather than assuming you can rush an application close to your travel dates — the same limitation Pakistani applicants face. Fingerprint submission is also currently waived for most short-stay applicants, under an exemption the consulate has extended through 31 December 2026 — confirm with the embassy that it’s still in place if your appointment falls close to or after that date.
